How much sleep does your child need?

As a new parent, that's probably one of your biggest questions. Below are some general guidelines as to how many hours of sleep the average child requires at various ages. Of course, every child is different — some need up to two hours more or less sleep than others.

AgeNighttime SleepDaytime Sleep *Total Sleep
1 month8 1/27 (3)15 1/2
3 months105 (3)15
6 months113 1/4 (2)14 1/4
9 months113 (2)14
12 months11 1/42 1/2 (2)13 3/4
18 months11 1/42 1/4 (1)13 1/2
2 years112 (1)13
3 years10 1/21 1/2 (1)12
* number of naps in parentheses

Keep in mind that most children need lots of sleep. Often, says BabyCenter sleep expert Jodi Mindell, author of Sleeping Through the Night, if a child has poor sleep habits or refuses to go to bed before 11 at night, his parents will think that he just doesn't need a lot of sleep. That's probably not true — in fact, it's likely that such a child is actually sleep-deprived. To see whether your child falls into that camp, ask yourself these questions:

• Does your child fall asleep almost every time he's in a car?

• Do you have to wake your child almost every morning?

• Does your child seem cranky, irritable, or overtired during the day?

• On some nights, does your child seem to crash much earlier than his usual bedtime?

If you answered "yes" to any of these, your child may be getting less sleep than he needs. To change this pattern, you'll need to help him develop good sleep habits and set an appropriate bedtime. "Then he'll get all the sleep he needs to be bright-eyed and bushy-tailed," Mindell says.

As he gets older, your child will probably stop napping and start doing all of his sleeping at night. Preschoolers and young elementary school students still need up to 10 or 11 hours of sleep a night, but that amount will gradually decrease. By the time he's a teenager, your child will need only about nine or 10 hours of shut-eye per night. To find out more about children's sleep patterns.

*** I found this info useful! People have made me wonder if Jocelyn was sleeping enough or too much, so I guess this is still the great answer! Here are some other tips Jocelyn and I have been using.[From Baby Wise and Happiest Baby on the Block] ***

Look-A-Like

Ok... so just about everyone tells us that Jocelyn looks like her daddy, but what do you think now? ;D At least we have similar mannerisms! Mirrored images! I totally agree that she looks like Derek but check it out! I came home and saw this photo and just laughed! So, yes. I purposefully grabbed an outfit that looked similar and a blanket. What's creepy is that I still have that little dress of mine from the 80's and I could put that on her and do a REAL imitation. This is me at 3 months and Jocelyn will be 3 months next week on the 25th! This should help us see what looks like me and everything else must be Derek!

...Thanks for sharing a laugh...

Her new lil outfit! SOMETHING THAT FITS! :D

WELL,
I finally get the chance to post some photos. My camera's battery is dead. Dead, like not rechargable dead and so we're on the hunt for a new one. My mom has been sharing hers. We have so much to share... because we have been having a blast! Jocelyn first got to fly from Hawaii to LA 5.5hrs. I have to tell you I was terrified... What if she cried the whole time!? What if she's like her dad and gets SICK on planes?! I was sick to MY stomach just thinking about it. I was all alone and went over my things 10 times to make sure I didn't miss anything. I HAD TO BE PREPARED FOR ANYTHING! Let me tell you... she was a doll! AN ANGEL! She ate as we went up and slept as we went down! She had one smelly diaper and THAT was an adventure, changing her in that TINY bathroom with out a built in changing table! Good thing there's one on my diaper bag!-Thanks FAMILY!! But she was all smiles and ZZZZZZzzzzz's the whole flight! THANK HEAVENS! I'm sorry, but you better believe I had the Baby Tylenol ready JUST IN CASE! I was also lucky to have an open seat next to me to have my diaper bag in easy reach!

So we arrived and Opa was so tickled to see his lil grandbaby! We grabbed our bag and hit the road to Uncle Bruce & Aunt Glenna's house. We stayed the night there and left the next evening from Long Beach to Utah. Again, I was a lil worried, but confident from our last experience that the plane ride would be fine. I had 4 extra hands and only 1.5 hrs to endure. It was a piece of CAKE! Chocolate cake!

Great Grandpa Brown picked us up and we stayed for my cousin's wedding and reception. SUCH a beautiful day for them! It was a delight to see family! SHOUT OUT TO UNCLE KEN! We saw Liz Miser- a friend I grew up with that is married and expecting in Utah, Amberly and Spencer Duncan- friends that just graduated from BYU-Hawaii and are also expecting. I had some Cafe Rio to complete my UTAH experience and then after lots of good times, we headed back to CALI. Yet another flight.

Again, she was perfect. Slept THE whole time. And can I say how AWESOME it was to have my own TV screen... to have the freedom to watch whatever channel I wanted on satellite TV or listen to music and select the movies! Kip sang it true... I love technology! If you haven't flown recently, PLEASE be sure to take some headphones the next time... you'll really LOVE your flight!

After a 2 hr delay in SLC, UT we left! Drove from Long Beach (which is such a nice quick and small airport-I couldn't believe how nice it was) to Bakersfield to see my Grandma Haar. She loved seeing Jocelyn! It was nice to catch up with her! The next morning we drove from BField to Fresno... home sweet home! It just keeps growing!

People keep asking me if I have island fever, and I don't THINK I do. But once you're on "The Mainland" you look around and think to yourself... land. Land! AND MORE LAND! Restaurant after restaurant, mall after mall, store after store... there's just so much MORE here. I like that. I love living in Hawaii and think it's great, but I can only do it for so long... I love having the opportunity to drive 3 hours and not be making a simple lap around one place. But please, don't get me wrong. Hawaii is beautiful! It's Paradise, not heaven.

Some of our friends here in Fresno, lent us a bassinet, stroller, car seat, and play gym.. it's been so nice to have it so conveniently here! It was nice that i didn't have to lug that on the plane from Hawaii! I would have burst with stress! Jocelyn has been a little off on her sleeping! No 8 hrs recently, but 5 or 6... that's not bad! I can't blame her! We went to a shower held in her honor. What a treat! So many people from my old wards came and friends from High School... Jocelyn got some SWEET gifts... now- to get them all to fit in one bag and not weigh over 50 lbs! HA!!!

WELL, I have a video of Jocelyn smiling and talking, but I'm not having any luck uploading it. I will keep trying. Poor Derek, he misses his lil hot pocket! (JoJo) She starting doing all these fun things after we left. NOT FAIR to him! So this whole blog is dedicated to that man who is alone... Derek we love and miss you! Can't wait to see you next WEEK! ;D

p.s.
THANK YOU friends in Hawaii that are watching over Derek! He's been lucky to have friends invite him over for dinner and play games with! Mahalo for being so thoughtful!

My dear friends, thanks for checkin in on us! We're doing great!
